A music and theater lover’s dream, St. Louis is home to one of America’s premier orchestras, the internationally acclaimed Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra; founded in St. Louis in 1880 they are the second oldest orchestra in the nation, and their permanent home, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Powell Symphony Hall. The world-renowned Opera Theater of St. Louis is an annual summer festival of opera performed in English, founded by Richard Gaddes, now the director of the Santa Fe Opera. The Times of London calls Opera Theater of St. Louis, “Magic on the Mississippi”.
If you enjoy the theater, St. Louis has just the ticket at either, The Fabulous Fox Theater featuring Broadway’s latest blockbusters and the nation’s largest and oldest outdoor theater, the Muny, featuring summer performances of some the best-loved plays and grandest musicals all under the stars.
St. Louis as always been associated with great ragtime, jazz and blues music from the likes of native Chuck Berry who still performs several times a year and Ike and Tina Turner and Miles Davis who began their careers in nearby East St. Louis. An impressive lineup of national and local musical entertainment from all genres performs throughout the region on a nightly basis.
